Known primarily for casual gaming, the Wii is currently the most cost efficient and family friendly gaming console on the market. In addition to popularizing casual games, the Wii also popularized retro gaming, with its vast array of older generation games available on the Wii Virtual Console. In addition to games on the Wii Virtual Console, the Wii Store also sells micro-games called WiiWare. These short, but low expense games have become a staple of the gaming industry in the last few years. The Wii Store updates with new WiiWare and Wii Virtual Console games every Monday. Wii Virtual Console games range from games as old as Commodore 64 games to as modern as N64 games. WiiWare games are a mix of games created by independent companies to showcase designer talent and episodic or micro-games produced by big name companies as companions to popular full-fledged games. The following games were released in the Wii Store for the week of 3/29/10. Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Character (Wii Virtual Console, 1000 Wii Points) - The Ogre Battle series is incredibly popular in Japan, but has never quite caught on in the U.S., due to unique game play. The series can be described as a strategic role playing game, where building units and deploying them properly is the primary game play mechanic. This style of hands-off game play during actual combat is becoming more popular recently and Nintendo chose a good time to release this game on Wii Virtual Console. Fans of role playing games, especially tactical role playing games, or real time strategy games should consider giving this game a shot. Diner Dash (WiiWare, 1000 Wii Points) - This game is a port of the popular PC game published by PlayFirst in 2003. Many online gamers first became familiar with on popular free game web sites like Yahoo Games. A demo version was made available for download on these free online game sites and the full version could be purchased for a modest fee. The quaint story of stock broker Flo turned Diner owner and hostess is a fast paced point and click game. Wildly successful, the game has produced approximately 20 sequels and was previously released on Xbox Live and PSN. Due to the Wii motion controls, the Wii is a perfect fit for this game and the game is appropriate for players of any age. WarioWare D.I.Y. Showcase (WiiWare, 800 Wii Points) - WarioWare is Nintendo's brainchild for showing off the potential of micro-games. This spin off game takes the concept of micro-games one step further and allows the player to create these games as well as play them. The difference between this game and WarioWare D.I.Y. on the DS is that this game allows the player to share created games online with other Wii owners. Even for players not interested in the online functionality, this game has 72 pre-made games. Cheap and with nearly infinite replay value, this is a great game for the Wii. |
